Meet Spud, the driving force behind the bass lines of Psycho Sequinz. Nicknamed "Spud" since he was 16, the moniker came about during his school days at Collingwood Tech when friends teasingly called him a potato after he frequently indulged in hot chips. Little did he know, that playful jab would stick for life!
Spud hails from a rich musical background, inspired by his grandfather, a talented musician who played a variety of instruments, including the tuba and double bass, and was the harpist for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Though Spud respects his roots, he’s keen to carve out his own path in the music scene.
He picked up the guitar at just 8 years old, thanks to his sister’s encouragement, but at 18, he discovered his true passion for the bass. After juggling both instruments for a few years, he made the leap to focus on the bass, realizing it was time to fully embrace his musical identity.
Musically, Spud draws influence from an eclectic mix of legends, including Deep Purple, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Boston, Living Colour, and Earth, Wind & Fire, along with the funk, soul, and blues sounds of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Growing up with older siblings also exposed him to folk classics like Peter, Paul and Mary.
His extensive experience includes performing in numerous bands over the decades, such as the STALE PRUNES, Blockbuster, and Lunchbox Legends, playing at iconic venues like the Tote, Corner Hotel, and countless pubs across rural Victoria. Spud has shared stages in places like Sale, Traralgon, and Bendigo, always bringing his signature low-end rumble that audiences feel long before they hear.
Beyond his role as a bassist, Spud is also an accomplished lighting technician and sound engineer. In the late 80s and early 90s, he owned and operated one of Melbourne’s largest lighting shows and honed his audio skills at the School of Audio Engineering, mixing for various bands both in the studio and on the road.
A formidable bassist, Spud adds depth and dynamic to Psycho Sequinz’s sound, complementing an already brilliant lineup of talented musicians. Though he’s capable of taking the lead on vocals, he prefers to enrich the harmony with his backing vocals, enhancing the overall musical experience.
With a passion for music that resonates through every performance, Spud is dedicated to creating unforgettable moments on stage—because there’s nothing quite like shaking the room with a powerful bass line!
